WHAT GOD IS LIKE—RIGHTEOUS AND HOLY 1 Peter 1:13-16

The Bible clearly describes the greatness of God: faithfulness, loyal love, omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence. Today, we will consider the righteousness and holiness of God. He can do no evil, no wrong. He can tell no lies. He can only do that which is righteous or just, for that is what it means to be holy. Let us consider this characteristic of God¡¯s nature.
I.        GOD IS HOLY!
1.        God is holy by nature (Text; Lev 11:44-45; 19:2; 20:26; Psalm 99:3, 5, 9; Isaiah 5:16; 6:7; 43:3; and elsewhere).
¡°Holy and awesome is his name¡± (Psalm 111:9).
2.        God is holy by action (Psalm 77:3—¡°Your ways are holy.¡±).
Some have asked through the centuries: ¡°How can a holy God send someone to hell?¡± The answer is that God sends no one to hell. When a person chooses to live his or her life apart from God in this life, God will not force Himself upon that person—either here in this life or in the next life. Thus, God allows that person to go to hell by his or her own choice, not His—since He sent His Son for that person. God invites or calls a person to be His child; each person must respond to that call in faith.
II.        THE HOLY GOD MAKES PLACES (AND THINGS) HOLY!
1.        God makes places holy by His very presence (Holy ground—Exodus 3:5 & Joshua 5:15; Holy Temple—Psalm 11:4 and elsewhere; Heaven—2 Chron. 30:27).
2.        God makes things holy by their use in His service (The Ark of the Covenant, which represented the very presence of God; The furniture in the Temple—1 Kings 8; The Scriptures—Romans 1:2).
All places where God is present are made holy—just as is this place of worship. All things consecrated for use in His service are made holy because they are used in His presence. The Bible that you carry and study is made holy because of His presence in it. God¡¯s presence makes places and things holy as they receive Him and serve Him.
III.        THE HOLY GOD MAKES PEOPLE (BELIEVERS) HOLY!
1.        The Psalmist asks, ¡°Who can stand in his holy place?¡± (Psalm 24:30).
(1)        No unbeliever will be able to because only the holy will see God (Heb. 12:14).
(2)        The believer is one who has been saved and called to a holy life (2 Tim. 1:9).
2.        God chooses to show His holiness through us (Ezekiel 38:16).
(1)        He calls us to be ¡°living sacrifices, holy and pleasing¡± to Him ((Romans 12:1).
(2)        He calls us to be ¡°a holy priesthood, a holy nation.¡±
¡°But you are a chosen people, a holy priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light¡± (1 Peter 2:9).
CONCLUSION
God has called out a people, believers, who are His children. We are to be holy as He is holy. John reminds us in the final chapter of the Bible: ¡°Let him who is holy continue to be holy¡± (Rev. 22:11). Should we choose to live carelessly and move out from under His hand of protection, He must allow us to suffer the consequences of our choice—because He is a righteous and just God. However, He will gladly cover us with His hand of protection once more when we repent and come back to Him. I remind you that God will not force us to come back; neither will He force Himself upon us. He may lovingly discipline us (or even harshly discipline us if necessary to get our attention), but we must choose to return to be under His protection once more. In our foolish rebellion, we endanger our lives and our loved ones. Remember, God demands that we be holy because He is holy!
