Our Bible text starts with an important question which is central to the Christian faith: "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"  "Son of Man" is a mysterious name which Jesus used to refer to his own person. With other words he asked his disciples: "Who is Jesus for Nazareth?"

¿À´Ã ¼º°æ º»¹®Àº ±âµ¶±³ ½Å¾ÓÀÇ Áß½ÉÀÌ µÇ´Â Áß¿äÇÑ Áú¹®À¸·Î ½ÃÀÛÇÕ´Ï´Ù. Áï ¡°»ç¶÷µéÀÌ ÀÎÀÚ¸¦ ´©±¸¶ó ÇÏ´À³Ä?¡± ¶ó´Â Áú¹®À¸·Î ½ÃÀÛÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ¡°ÀÎÀÚ¡± ¶ó´Â ¸»Àº ÁÖ´Ô ÀÚ½ÅÀ» °¡¸®Å°´Â ¸»À̾ú´Âµ¥ ½Åºñ·Î¿î À̸§À̶ó°í »ý°¢ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ÁÖ´Ô²²¼­´Â Á¦Àڵ鿡°Ô ¡°³ª»ç·¿ÀÇ ¿¹¼ö°¡ ´©±¸³Ä?¡± ¶ó°í ¹¯±âµµ Çß½À´Ï´Ù.  



I. The question about Jesus is crucial to every human being.

The moment which Jesus had chosen to ask his question was a critical one. It marked a turning point in his earthly career. He had finished his work in Galilee. He had evangelized, taught, healed the sick, and fed the multitude. This had involved him in encounters with individuals and groups. During each of those encounters with him it became evident: The One, who is standing here, speaking and acting, is an extra-ordinary person. You cannot meet him without being touched in the depth of your heart.

I. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀÌ ´©±¸½Ã³Ä´Â Áú¹®Àº ¸ðµç Àΰ£µé¿¡°Ô ¸Å¿ì Áß¿äÇÑ Áú¹®ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ ÀÌ¿Í °°Àº Áú¹®À» ÇϽŠ¶§¿Í ¼ø°£Àº Áß¿äÇÑ ¶§¿Í ¼ø°£À̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀÇ »ý¾ÖÀÇ ÀüȯÁ¡ÀÎ ¶§¿Í ¼ø°£À̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. °¥¸±¸®¿¡¼­ÀÇ »ç¿ªÀ» ¸¶Ä£ ¶§¿´½À´Ï´Ù. º¹À½À» ÀüÇÏ¼Ì°í °¡¸£Ä¡¼Ì°í º´ÀÚµéÀ» °íÄ¡¼Ì°í ¸¹Àº »ç¶÷µé ¸ÔÀ̼̽À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­´Â »ç¶÷µéÀ» °³ÀÎÀûÀ¸·Î ¶Ç´Â ´ÜüÀûÀ¸·Î ¸¸³ª¼Ì½À´Ï´Ù. ÀÌ¿Í °°Àº ¸¸³²À» ÅëÇؼ­ ¸¹Àº »ç¶÷µéÀº Áö±Ý ¼­¼­ ¸»¾¸ÇϽðí ÇൿÇϽô ºÐÀÌ º¸Åë »ç¶÷ÀÌ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó´Â °ÍÀ» ºÐ¸íÇÏ°Ô ¾Ë°Ô µÇ¾úÀ» °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. °¡½¿ ±íÀº °÷ÀÇ °¨µ¿À» ¹ÞÁö ¾ÊÀ¸¸é ±× ºÐÀ» ¸¸³¯ ¼ö ¾ø½À´Ï´Ù.  



An encounter with opposite result is recorded in the story preceding our text (16:1-12).  Here the leaders of the theological groupings amongst the Jews had come to Jesus: The Pharisees and Sadducees. They, too, felt deeply challenged by Him; but they refused to respond appropriately.

Now Jesus moves on to the second question. This one is addressed to his disciples themselves: "But who do you say that I am?"

In asking His question in such direct way He makes it quite clear: With regard to His identity Jesus expects one authentic answer from His disciples. The correct reply to this question decides upon the eternal destiny of each hearer of the Gospel - then and now.

À¯´ëÀεé Áß¿¡¼­ ½ÅÇÐÀûÀÎ ÁöµµÀÚµéÀÌ ¿¹¼ö´Ô¿¡°Ô·Î ¿Ô½À´Ï´Ù. ±×µéµµ ±íÀº µµÀüÀ» ¹Þ¾ÒÀ» °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯³ª ±×µéÀº ÀûÀýÇÑ ÀÀ´äÀ» Çϱ⸦ °ÅºÎÇß½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀº Áö±Ý µÎ ¹ø° Áú¹®À» Çß½À´Ï´Ù. ÀÌ Áú¹®Àº Á¦ÀÚµé Àڽŵ鿡°Ô ÁÖ¾îÁ³½À´Ï´Ù. ¡°³ÊÈñ´Â ³ª¸¦ ´©±¸¶ó ÇÏ´À³Ä?¡± ¶ó´Â Áú¹®À̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ Á¦Àڵ鿡°Ô Á÷Á¢ Áú¹®ÇϽùǷΠÀڱⰡ ´©±¸ÀÎÁö¿¡ ´ëÇÑ È®½ÇÇÑ ´ë´äÀ» ¾ò±â¸¦ ±â´ëÇϽŠ°ÍÀ̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ÀÌ Áú¹®¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¿Ã¹Ù¸¥ ´ë´äÀº º¹À½À» µè´Â ÀÚµéÀÇ ¿µ¿øÇÑ ¿î¸íÀ» °áÁ¤ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±× ¶§µµ Áö±Ýµµ ¸¶Âù°¡ÁöÀÔ´Ï´Ù.



II. The Church lives by the truth of Peter's confession

When Jesus had asked his disciples: "But who do you say that I am?" Simon steps forward and makes a confession for which Jesus calls him "blessed". He even gives him a new name, Kephas. That is the original Aramaic form of the Greek word "petra" = rock. From it the personal name Petros derived. Jesus says: "On this rock I will build my Church."  When calling Simon "Peter", Jesus promises to him an honorable place of future responsibility: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven."

II. ±³È¸´Â º£µå·ÎÀÇ °í¹éÀÇ Áø¸®¿¡ ÀÇÇؼ­ »ì¾Æ°©´Ï´Ù.

¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ Á¦Àڵ鿡°Ô ¡°³ÊÈñ´Â ³ª¸¦ ´©±¸¶ó ÇÏ´À³Ä?¡± ¶ó°í Áú¹®ÇßÀ» ¶§ ½Ã¸óÀº ¾ÕÀ¸·Î ³ª¿Í¼­ ½Å¾ÓÀ» °í¹éÇߴµ¥ ÀÌ¿¡ ´ëÇØ ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ ¡°³×°¡ º¹ÀÌ ÀÖ´Ù¡± ¶ó°í ¸»¾¸ÇϽø鼭 ±×¿¡°Ô °Ô¹Ù¶ó´Â »õ·Î¿î À̸§À» ºÎ¿©Çϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. °Ô¹Ù´Â º£µå¶ó Áï ¹Ý¼®À̶õ Èñ¶ø ¸»ÀÇ ¿øÇüÀÎ ¾Æ¶÷¾î¿´½À´Ï´Ù. ¿©±â¼­ º£µå·Î¶ó´Â °³ÀÎÀÇ À̸§ÀÌ À¯·¡µÇ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ ÀÌ·¸°Ô ¸»¾¸Çϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¡°³»°¡ ÀÌ ¹Ý¼® À§¿¡ ³» ±³È¸¸¦ ¼¼¿ì¸®´Ï.¡± ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ ½Ã¸óÀ» º£µå·Î¶ó°í ºÎ¸£½Ã¸é¼­ ¹Ì·¡ÀÇ Ã¥ÀÓ¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¿µ¿¹·Î¿î ÁöÀ§±îÁö ¾à¼ÓÇϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¡°³»°¡ õ±¹ÀÇ ¿­¼è¸¦ ³×°Ô ÁÖ¸®´Ï.¡±



Peter's confession contains two basic affirmations:

Firstly  he affirms that Jesus is no one less but Israel's expected Messiah. He is that future King who in the power of God's Spirit would accomplish Israel's spiritual and physical redemption. Now Peter enlarges his former affirmation by a second one of even greater significance: "¡¦ and you are the Son of the living God!" The Messiah is not only the greatest representative of the human race. Far more: He comes from God Himself. He is even God's Son, and as such He shares in the divine nature of God the Father himself.

º£µå·ÎÀÇ °í¹éÀº µÎ °¡Áö ±âº»ÀûÀÎ È®¾ðÀ» Æ÷ÇÔÇÏ°í ÀÖ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ù°·Î º£µå·Î´Â ¿¹¼ö´ÔÀÌ À̽º¶ó¿¤ÀÌ ±â´ëÇÏ´Â ¸Þ½Ã¾ÆÀÓÀ» È®¾ðÇß½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ´É·ÂÀ¸·Î À̽º¶ó¿¤ÀÇ ¿µÀûÀÌ°í ÀÚ¿¬ÀûÀÎ ±¸¿øÀ» ¿Ï¼ºÇÒ ¿ÕÀ̽ÉÀ» È®¾ðÇß½À´Ï´Ù. ±× ´ÙÀ½ º£µå·Î´Â µÎ ¹ø°·Î º¸´Ù À§´ëÇÑ ÀǹÌÀÇ È®¾ðÀ» °í¹éÇß½À´Ï´Ù. ¡°ÁÖ´Â »ì¾Æ°è½Å Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¾ÆµéÀ̽ôÏÀÌ´Ù.¡± ¸Þ½Ã¾ß´Â ÀηùÀÇ °¡Àå À§´ëÇÑ ´ëÇ¥ÀÏ »ÓÀÌ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó´Â °ÍÀ̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ±× ÀÌ»óÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±× ºÐÀº Çϳª´Ô ÀÚ½ÅÀ¸·ÎºÎÅÍ ¿À½Ã´Â ºÐÀ̽ʴϴÙ. ±× ºÐÀº Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¾ÆµéÀÌ½Ã°í ¼ººÎ Çϳª´Ô ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ½Å¼ºÀ» °øÀ¯ÇϽŠºÐÀ̽ʴϴÙ.



Why did the death of Christ have saving power for all mankind? The reason is this: Jesus is the "Immanuel", the "God with us".

Peter's confession is a statement which he never would have arrived at from his own mind. "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona", Jesus praises him, "because this was not revealed to him by a human being but by my Father in heaven!"

The confession of Peter is a gift of grace that comes from God the Father through the Holy Spirit. A person, who has received this gift of faith in Jesus Christ, possesses an inner assurance that cannot be shaken. The one thing that matters now is that you live consistently with that spiritual knowledge of Christ.

Let us now move to the third lesson from our text:

¿Ö ±×¸®½ºµµÀÇ Á×À½ÀÌ ¸ðµç Àηù¸¦ ±¸¿øÇÏ´Â ´É·ÂÀ» Áö³æ½À´Ï±î? ±× ÀÌÀ¯´Â ÀÌ·¸½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ ÀÓ¸¶´©¿¤À̽ñ⠶§¹®ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. Áï ¡°Çϳª´ÔÀÌ ¿ì¸®¿Í ÇÔ²² °è½Ã´Â ºÐ¡± À̽ñ⠶§¹®ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. º£µå·ÎÀÇ °í¹éÀº ±× ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ »ý°¢À¸·Î´Â µµÀúÈ÷ µµ´ÞÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Â Áø¼úÀ̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ ±×¸¦ ĪÂùÇϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¡°¹Ù¿ä³ª ½Ã¸ó¾Æ ³×°¡ º¹ÀÌ ÀÖµµ´Ù À̸¦ ³×°Ô ¾Ë°Ô ÇÑ ÀÌ´Â Ç÷À°ÀÌ ¾Æ´Ï¿ä Çϴÿ¡ °è½Å ³» ¾Æ¹öÁö½Ã´Ï¶ó.¡± º£µå·ÎÀÇ °í¹éÀº ¼º·ÉÀ» ÅëÇؼ­ ¼ººÎ Çϳª´ÔÀ¸·ÎºÎÅÍ ¿Â ÀºÇýÀÇ ¼±¹°À̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ´©±¸µçÁö ÀÌ¿Í °°Àº ¿¹¼ö ±×¸®½ºµµ¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¹ÏÀ½ÀÇ ¼±¹°À» ¹ÞÀº »ç¶÷Àº Èçµé¸± ¼ö ¾ø´Â ³»ÀûÀÎ È®½ÅÀ» ¼ÒÀ¯ÇÏ°Ô µË´Ï´Ù. Áö±Ý ¹®Á¦°¡ µÇ´Â °ÍÀº ¿ì¸®µéÀÌ ±×¸®½ºµµ¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ±×¿Í °°Àº ¿µÀûÀÎ È®½ÅÀ» Á¾½Ã ÀÏ°üÇÏ¿© Áö´Ï°í »ç´Â°¡ ¶ó´Â °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯¸é ÀÌÁ¦ ¿À´Ã º»¹®ÀÌ °¡¸£Ä¡´Â ¼¼ ¹ø° ±³ÈÆÀ» »ìÆ캸°Ú½À´Ï´Ù.



III. Only by upholding Peter's confession the Church will resist demonic opposition

We would not perceive the weight of our gospel text if we do not notice its dramatic conclusion. It contains a prophetical warning: Together with Jesus' pledge to Peter He also alerts him to a mortal danger: The same Church that Jesus will build with Peter will become subject to satanic attacks. Jesus presupposes the relentless battle between Christ and Satan for the dominion over Church and world.

III. ¿ÀÁ÷ º£µå·ÎÀÇ ½Å¾Ó°í¹éÀ» ±»°Ô ºÙÀâÀ¸¹Ç·Î ±³È¸°¡ »çźÀÇ °ø°ÝÀ» °ÝÅðÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Ù´Â °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¿ì¸®°¡ ¿À´Ã º»ºÐÀÇ ±ØÀûÀÎ °á·Ð¿¡ ÁÖ¸ñÇÏÁö ¾Ê´Â´Ù¸é ¿À´Ã º»¹®ÀÇ Á߿伺À» ÀνÄÇÏÁö ¸øÇÒ °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¿À´Ã º»¹®Àº ¿¹¾ðÀûÀÎ °æ°í¸¦ Æ÷ÇÔÇÏ°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­´Â º£µå·Î¿¡ ´ëÇÑ º¸Áõ°ú ÇÔ²² Ä¡¸íÀûÀÎ À§ÇèÀ» °æ°íÇϼ̽À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­ º£µå·Î¿Í ÇÔ²² ¼¼¿ì½Ç ±³È¸°¡ »çźÀÇ °ø°ÝÀÇ ´ë»óÀÌ µÉ °ÍÀ̶ó´Â ¸»¾¸À̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ¿¹¼ö´Ô²²¼­´Â ±³È¸¿Í ¼¼»ó¿¡ ´ëÇÑ Áö¹è¸¦ À§ÇØ ±×¸®½ºµµ¿Í »çźÀÇ ÂüȤÇÑ ÀüÀïÀÌ ÀÖÀ» °ÍÀ» ¿¹»óÇϼ̽À´Ï´Ù.



Wherever Jesus is confessed as conqueror over sin, hell and death, Satan loses his arrogated position. Thus for the sake of self-maintaining the devil mobilizes all his dark forces to silence a Church confessing Christ in this world. In his pernicious plan the enemy adopts a double strategy. On the one hand he oppresses her by external opponents. She will be persecuted. In our days she is persecuted mainly in Communist and Islamic states.

¿¹¼ö´ÔÀÌ ÁË¿Í Áö¿Á°ú Á×À½ÀÇ ¼¼·ÂÀ» Á¤º¹ÇÏ´Â ºÐÀ¸·Î °í¹éµÉ ¶§ »çźÀº ±×°¡ Å»ÃëÇÑ ÁöÀ§¸¦ »ó½ÇÇÏ°Ô µË´Ï´Ù. ±×·¡¼­ »çźÀº ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ¼¼·ÂÀ» À¯ÁöÇϱâ À§Çؼ­ ÀÚ±âÀÇ ¾îµÎ¿òÀÇ ¼¼·ÂµéÀ» Ãѵ¿¿øÇÏ¿© ±³È¸·Î ÇÏ¿©±Ý ±×¸®½ºµµ¸¦ ¼¼»ó¿¡¼­ °í¹éÇÏÁö ¸øÇϵµ·Ï ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. »çźÀº ±×ÀÇ Æı«ÀûÀÎ °èȹÀ» ¼¼¿ì°í ÀÌÁßÀûÀÎ Àü·«À» äÅÃÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ÇÑ ÆíÀ¸·Î´Â ¿ÜÀûÀÎ Àû´ë¼¼·ÂµéÀ» ÅëÇØ ±³È¸¸¦ ¾ï¾ÐÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±³È¸´Â ¹ÚÇظ¦ ´çÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±³È¸´Â Áö±Ý ÁÖ·Î °ø»êÁÖÀÇ¿Í À̽½¶÷¿¡ ÀÇÇؼ­ ¹ÚÇظ¦ ´çÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

On the other hand the Enemy wages an even more dangerous attack: The confession of Christ is to be eroded from inside. Thus the same terms are used by which the Gospel traditionally has been expressed in an orthodox sense. But now they are filled with a different content. Salvation from sin is changed to become political liberation. The name "Jesus Christ" is connected with modern concepts: Jesus the teacher of a new moral, Jesus, the champion of the oppressed people, Christ the revolutionary. In this way attempts are made to dethrone Jesus by a theological palace revolution within the churches. They try to replace Him by other powers that assume spiritual authority over them.

´Ù¸¥ ÇÑÆíÀ¸·Î´Â ¿ø¼ö°¡ ¸ð´Ù À§ÇèÇÑ °ø°ÝÀ» ½ÃµµÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±×¸®½ºµµ¿¡ ´ëÇÑ °í¹éÀÌ ³»ÀûÀ¸·Î ħ½ÄÇϵµ·Ï ¸¸µì´Ï´Ù. º¹À½ÀÌ Á¤ÅëÀûÀÎ Àǹ̷ΠǥÇöµÇ´ø ÀüÅëÀûÀÎ ¿ë¾îµéÀ» »ç¿ëÇϱâ´Â ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯³ª ´Ù¸¥ Àǹ̸¦ Áö´Ï°Ô ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. °á±¹ Á˷κÎÅÍÀÇ ±¸¿øÀÌ Á¤Ä¡ÀûÀÎ ÀÚÀ¯·Î ¹Ù²Ù¾îÁý´Ï´Ù. ¡°¿¹¼ö ±×¸®½ºµµ¡± ¶ó´Â À̸§ÀÌ Çö´ëÀûÀÎ Àǹ̸¦ Áö´Ï°Ô ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. This twofold threat from outside and inside has accompanied the Church's way during all centuries since the days of the Apostles. It is going to find its climax in the apocalyptic temptation and tribulation at the close of this age by the Antichrist. But just in view of such a gloomy background we are comforted by the promise which Jesus gave at the confession of Simon Bar-Jona: "On this rock I will build my Church, and the powers of death will not prevail against her." It is assuring that the Church in her witness has an unchangeable doctrinal foundation in confessional statements. These will prove to be solid rocks if they are revived by courageous acts of confessing Christ today.

When did Peter become the confessor and reliable rock of the early Church? It was when he together with his fellow apostle John was prosecuted by the High Court in Jerusalem, and finally when he became a martyr during Nero's persecution in Rome.

º£µå·Î°¡ ¾ðÁ¦ ½Å¾ÓÀÇ °í¹éÀÚ°¡ µÇ¾ú°í º£µå·Î°¡ ¾ðÁ¦ Ãʴ뱳ȸÀÇ ¹ÏÀ»¸¸ÇÑ ¹Ý¼®ÀÌ µÇ¾ú½À´Ï±î? ±×°ÍÀº ±×°¡ »çµµ ¿äÇÑ°ú ÇÔ²² ¿¹·ç»ì·½ÀÇ °íµî¹ýÁ¤¿¡ ÀÇÇØ Ã³¹úÀ» ¹Þ°í ³ªÁß¿¡´Â ³×·Î¿¡ ÀÇÇØ ·Î¸¶¿¡¼­ ¹ÚÇظ¦ ¹Þ¾Æ ¼ø±³ÇÏ°Ô µÉ ¶§¿¡ µÇ¾îÁ³½À´Ï´Ù.  

Similar experiences have been made by confessors and martyrs of all branches of the Church throughout her bi-millennial course. The Korean Church has contributed remarkably to the honorary records of martyrdom three times in her history.

Firstly: Quite early Catholic Christians were martyred under the Ming dynasty early in the 19th century.

Secondly: staunch Protestants in the 20th century who confessed of Christ to be the only Lord were tortured and killed, because they resisted to join Japanese Shinto worship.

Thirdly: many more Christians were slaughtered brutally by Korean Communists. I was deeply impressed when I read the wonderful testimony of pastor Yang-Won Sohn and his two sons it is recorded in the book of his daughter Dong-Hee Sohn: "My Cup Overflows".

¼¼ ¹ø°´Â ´õ ¸¹Àº ±×¸®½ºµµÀεéÀÌ Çѱ¹ÀÇ °ø»ê´çµé¿¡ ÀÇÇØ ¹«ÀÚºñÇÏ°Ô Ã³ÇüÀ» ´çÇÑ ÀÏÀ̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. Àú´Â ¼Õ¾ç¿ø ¸ñ»ç´Ô°ú ±×ÀÇ µÎ ¾ÆµéÀÇ ³î¶ó¿î ½Å¾Ó°í¹éÀ» ÀÐÀ¸¸é¼­ ±íÀº °¨µ¿À» ¹Þ¾Ò½À´Ï´Ù. ±×ÀÇ µþ ¼Õµ¿Èñ ¿©»ç°¡ ¾´ ¡°³ªÀÇ ¾Æ¹öÁö ¼Õ¾ç¿ø ¸ñ»ç¡±("My Cup Overflows")¿¡ ±â·ÏÀÌ µÇ¾î ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.

One fellow prisoner of pastor Yang-Won Sohn, Chang-Soo Kim, later told what he experienced with him during his last days in prison: "He could hardly sleep that night because of the excruciating pain from beating. He suffered from high fever and was near death. But in the midst of moaning, he never forgot to witness about Christ to others in the cell. He encouraged everyone in a soft voice: ¡®All of you, believe in Jesus, and let's go to heaven together.' "

My dear listeners: Your present circumstances here in South Korea are quite different from that situation of violent persecution in which that confession was made. But in the deepest analysis the situation of the Church is similar at all times, and here it is only 45 km away. The confession of Jesus Christ is contested in manifold ways both in words and in deeds. For its claim that Jesus is our only Redeemer and Lord is not acceptable in our secular and syncretistic climate.

Thus we, too, are called upon to stand up for Jesus like all confessors throughout the history of the Church. We are summoned to shun neither contempt nor persecution, but to confess with Peter: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."  "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8) Amen!

Our Bible text starts with an important question which is central to the Christian faith: "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"  "Son of Man" is a mysterious name which Jesus used to refer to his own person. With other words he asked his disciples: "Who is Jesus for Nazareth?"




I. The question about Jesus is crucial to every human being.

The moment which Jesus had chosen to ask his question was a critical one. It marked a turning point in his earthly career. He had finished his work in Galilee. He had evangelized, taught, healed the sick, and fed the multitude. This had involved him in encounters with individuals and groups. During each of those encounters with him it became evident: The One, who is standing here, speaking and acting, is an extra-ordinary person. You cannot meet him without being touched in the depth of your heart.

The first existential response was given by the disciples when Jesus called them on the shore of Lake Gennesaret. The Gospels report: "Immediately they left their nets and followed Him" (Matth. 4:20).  

An encounter with opposite result is recorded in the story preceding our text (16:1-12).  Here the leaders of the theological groupings amongst the Jews had come to Jesus: The Pharisees and Sadducees. They, too, felt deeply challenged by Him; but they refused to respond appropriately.

Now Jesus moves on to the second question. This one is addressed to his disciples themselves: "But who do you say that I am?"

In asking His question in such direct way He makes it quite clear: With regard to His identity Jesus expects one authentic answer from His disciples. The correct reply to this question decides upon the eternal destiny of each hearer of the Gospel - then and now.



II. The Church lives by the truth of Peter's confession

When Jesus had asked his disciples: "But who do you say that I am?" Simon steps forward and makes a confession for which Jesus calls him "blessed". He even gives him a new name, Kephas. That is the original Aramaic form of the Greek word "petra" = rock. From it the personal name Petros derived. Jesus says: "On this rock I will build my Church."

When calling Simon "Peter", Jesus promises to him an honorable place of future responsibility: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven."



Peter's confession contains two basic affirmations:

Firstly  he affirms that Jesus is no one less but Israel's expected Messiah. He is that future King who in the power of God's Spirit would accomplish Israel's spiritual and physical redemption.

Now Peter enlarges his former affirmation by a second one of even greater significance: "¡¦ and you are the Son of the living God!"

The Messiah is not only the greatest representative of the human race. Far more: He comes from God Himself. He is even God's Son, and as such He shares in the divine nature of God the Father himself.

Why did the death of Christ have saving power for all mankind? The reason is this: Jesus is the "Immanuel", the "God with us".

Peter's confession is a statement which he never would have arrived at from his own mind. "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona", Jesus praises him, "because this was not revealed to him by a human being but by my Father in heaven!"

The confession of Peter is a gift of grace that comes from God the Father through the Holy Spirit. A person, who has received this gift of faith in Jesus Christ, possesses an inner assurance that cannot be shaken. The one thing that matters now is that you live consistently with that spiritual knowledge of Christ.

Let us now move to the third lesson from our text:



III. Only by upholding Peter's confession the Church will resist demonic opposition

We would not perceive the weight of our gospel text if we do not notice its dramatic conclusion. It contains a prophetical warning: Together with Jesus' pledge to Peter He also alerts him to a mortal danger: The same Church that Jesus will build with Peter will become subject to satanic attacks. Jesus presupposes the relentless battle between Christ and Satan for the dominion over Church and world.

Wherever Jesus is confessed as conqueror over sin, hell and death, Satan loses his arrogated position. Thus for the sake of self-maintaining the devil mobilizes all his dark forces to silence a Church confessing Christ in this world.

In his pernicious plan the enemy adopts a double strategy. On the one hand he oppresses her by external opponents. She will be persecuted. In our days she is persecuted mainly in Communist and Islamic states.  

On the other hand the Enemy wages an even more dangerous attack: The confession of Christ is to be eroded from inside. Thus the same terms are used by which the Gospel traditionally has been expressed in an orthodox sense. But now they are filled with a different content.

Salvation from sin is changed to become political liberation. The name "Jesus Christ" is connected with modern concepts: Jesus the teacher of a new moral, Jesus, the champion of the oppressed people, Christ the revolutionary. In this way attempts are made to dethrone Jesus by a theological palace revolution within the churches. They try to replace Him by other powers that assume spiritual authority over them.
