Christian Ethics – Principles from Rom 12:1-21

1.        Verse 1: In view of God¡¯s mercy (reference to Chapter 1-11) Christian ethics branches from what God has done for us. Christian ethics should be an expression of the character of God. (Eph 5:1 – Be imitators of God¡¦just as Christ¡¦)
Whenever we dislocate what we have to do (the imperative) from what God has done for us (the indicative), the human being and his sinful desires instead of the holy God and His pure intentions become the source of our ethical orientation.

2.        Verse 1 and 2: Offer your bodies¡¦do not conform¡¦renewing of your mind¡¦his good, pleasing and perfect will. Christian ethics is first and foremost finding alignment with the will of God and not the pattern of the world.
In SA when the church discussed the gay issue, it was very obvious how they stayed away from Biblical exposition (theology) and reverted to philosophy, psychology and sociology in an effort to find an answer that would be aligned with the pattern of the world.

3.        Verse 3-8: In Christ we form one body and each member and each member belongs to all the others. Sober judgment in Christian ethics is found in the community of the body of Christ and we lose moral clarity with moral individualism.
We mostly have church without having community. In community you are interdependent, equal, transparent, accountable¡¦learning from diversity etc. We have lost most of this in the church and can regain this through true discipleship.

4.        Verse 9-13: Be devoted in brotherly love¡¦honor one another above yourself. The pivotal core of Christian ethics is the unique self-sacrificial, other-centered and unconditional love of Jesus demonstrated in a practical way (addressing needs and practicing hospitality).
If we want to rediscover true Christian ethics, we will have to rediscover true love. Although truth and love need to be inseparable twin-brothers, we have to remember that Jesus, when asked about the law said that all the law and prophets hang on the commandment to love. Preaching or prophesy or knowledge or faith or compassion or devotion counts nothing without love.
Be other-centered! E.g. One year shortly before Christmas we wanted our children to learn that Christmas is about giving, not receiving. For this we found three poor kids the same age as my children so that my children could give them money to buy presents for themselves. My son was shocked to discover that this poorest of poor boys who never before had the chance to buy himself a new present used the money to buy a doll for his sister. This boy was so other-centered that his own needs did not dominate his behavior.
Be unconditional! E.g. Norm Wakefield tells the story of the birth of his 4th child. Him and his wife praised God for this ¡®perfect gift¡¯ whilst the nursing staff cleaned the baby. When the doctor came back he said: I am so sorry. Your baby is a Down- syndrome child. At that moment God told him to pray the same prayer again and say thank you for the perfect gift. He could not pray the prayer and discovered that he did not love his child, but that he loved the expectation he had for his child. God¡¯s love is not ¡®because of¡¯, but ¡®so that¡¯. His love is not conditional, but intentional! This understanding of love is key to pure Christian ethics.

5.        Verse 14-21: Bless those who persecute you¡¦overcome evil with good. Christian ethics has the unique approach to adversity: it overcomes evil with good!

Myles Munro said: God wants to colonize earth from heaven through us!
Martin Luther King jnr. on ¡®Why to love enemies¡¯:
- Returning hate for hate multiplies hate.
- Hate scars the soul and distorts the personality.
- Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend
¡®We shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering.
We shall meet your physical force with soul force. Do to us what you will, and we shall continue to love you!  ¡¦Throw us in jail, and we shall still love you!
Send your hooded perpetrators of violence into our community at the midnight hour and beat us and But be ye assured that we will wear you down by our capacity to suffer.
One day we shall win freedom, but not only for ourselves. We shall so appeal to your heart and conscience that we shall win you in the process, and our victory will be a double victory!
Love is the most durable power in the world! Leave us half dead, and we shall still love you!

ONE MORE PRINCIPLE – NOT FROM ROM 12:
6.        Christian ethics gets mainly assimilated/imparted into society through the family(Eph 5; Col 3)
Since the main role of every father is to establish moral authority, the absence of our fathers leaves our children with malnutrition related to Christian ethics.
