The discovery of this gift - and her own unique expressions of worship - is nothing new for Christian recording artist, Cheri Keaggy. The discovery began when, as a novice worship coordinator for her local church, Cheri flipped through endless music books, look-ing for songs that would best express the pastor's sermon on Psalm 91. When she didn't find what she was looking for, her husband suggested she write something of her own. Skeptical of her songwriting abilities, Cheri gave it her best, and within one afternoon "You, Oh Lord, Are My Refuge" was born. She taught it to the worship band that evening, and on Sunday the song became a part of the worship at her church.
But that was just the beginning.
Three albums, eight number one songs and a Dove Award later, Cheri Keaggy is recognized as a mainstay in the adult contempo-rary and inspirational genres. She has written every song on each of her albums with the exception of two, which she co-wrote one with Randy Stonehill and the other with Charlie Peacock. Her music expresses the reality of her walk with God. Honest songs with timeless truths.
"There Is Joy in the Lord" finds Cheri taking a short break from her normal recording to reflect on and reintroduce the songs first born in her heart, songs of praise penned specifically for worshipers. "This is not a departure or a change of direction," says Cheri. "It's something we've wanted to do from the beginning, to have all my worship material on one recording." Produced by Billy Batstone, Tommy Coomes and Eddie Keaggy (known for their work with the Maranatha Praise Band, Greg Laurie's Harvest Crusades, Franklin Graham Crusades and Promise Keepers), "There Is Joy in the Lord" is a collection of upbeat, passion-filled songs for worship, presented in a "praise band friendly" format. Easy to sing, easy to play, and easy to teach, the record progresses much like a contemporary worship service would, from the call to worship in "We Have Come to Worship Him" to the praise and adoration of "Glory Be" to the consecration of "I Want to Follow You" and meaningful communion in "In Remembrance of Me."
"Because of the role I had, being in charge of the worship at my church, a lot of my early songs were worship songs easy to learn and full of specific scriptural truths," Cheri says. "On this album, we wanted to highlight those songs in a new way and in the way they were originally intended, as a tool for the worship leader." But beyond that purpose, Cheri's latest album is intended as a soundtrack for worship, regardless of setting. "One of the things I've learned is that my idea of worship was so small," she says. "As a child I equated worship with singing in church, but He has shown me that worship is so much broader. The trees of the fields clap their hands. I worship Him when I look at Him in wonder, and I may not be singing a note. Worship is so much more about the heart condition than anything else.
"My writing comes out of a personal relationship with the Lord. That's my whole worldview - Christ in me. So my songs come from that place of humility, that place of looking not at myself but at Him and all He's done."
To write from an honest place-whether out of worship experience or other life experiences-requires the vision to see what God is teaching, where God is at work in the day-to-day. "When we began thinking about this record, the first thing that came to mind was this notion of taking time out to worship," she says. "We miss so much of what God has for us because we're consumed with the stuff of life, the busyness."
Cheri recalls a specific instance when that truth was made plain. Working around the house, doing laundry and dishes and going through her "to do" list, she had barely noticed the first snow flurries of winter, an event she'd anxiously awaited for days. As she stood in the kitchen, she felt the Lord prompting her, "Cheri, you've waited for this. If you will stop you will see. I've got all these things to show you, but you need to be looking for where I am working." "That snowfall," she says in retrospect, "was a worship experience."
"I hope the songs on "There Is Joy in the Lord" will give voice to all of life's moments like that," she says, "a worshipful pause from life's hectic pace. These songs aren't just for singing at church, but for all of us, for busy people who really want to make time for God in the everyday, at home, in the car, wherever we choose to worship Him."
Time to discover the gift of worship and to discover anew that there is, indeed, joy in the Lord.

예배 준비 담당이던 그녀는 언제나처럼 여러 찬양집을 넘기면서 목사님 설교 말씀인 시편91편에 적당한 곡을 찾고 있었다. 아무리 넘겨도 마땅한 곡을 찾지 못하자 그녀의 남편이 '직접 곡을 써보는게 어떠냐' 말했고 자신의 작곡 실력에 자신이 없었지만, 어느날 오후 시편 91편 말씀이 담긴 '주님, 당신은 나의 피난처이십니다(You, Oh Lord, Are My Refuge)'가 완성되었다. 이 곡은 후에 그녀의 첫 번째 앨범 Child Of The Father에 수록되었고 결국 라디오 차트 1위에 오른 넘버원 송이 되었다.
그녀의 뛰어난 실력을 말하는 게 아니다. 체리 케기(Cheri Keaggy) - 그녀는 너무나도 평범한 두 아이의 엄마, 아내, 여자 그리고... 예배자이다. 음악성이 그리 뛰어나지도 않고 화려함과는 거리가 멀다. 그녀의 노래에는 시적이거나 통찰력 있는 가사가 아니라 그저 일상의 대화 같은 아주 단순한 내용이 담겨있을 뿐이다. 어떤 엄마들과 마찬가지로 정신없는 오전시간을 보내고 하루 종일 아이들과 함께 하는 그녀에게 노래는, 세탁물을 개면서, 운전을 하면서, 설거지를 하면서 하늘을 향해 향기롭게 피어난다. 드라마틱한 사건을 통한 이야기들도 물론 우리에게 감동을 가져다주지만 일상 속에 들어있는 깊은 예배의 감동은 그것과 비교할 수 없는 또 다른 아름다움이 있다. 이처럼 체리의 노래들은 그 놀라운 '일상성'으로 우리와 매우 가깝고 친근하게 동행하는 매력이 있다.

고등학교 시절부터 활동적인 교회생활을 하던 중 지금의 남편 에디(Eddie Keaggy)를 만나게 된다. 그는 복음으로 뜨거운 젊은이였으며 교제를 시작하면서 그녀에게 "크리스챤인가요?"라고 물었을 때, 자신은 나쁜 짓 하지 않으니까 크리스챤이라고 생각해오던 체리는 그 질문으로 하나님께 진지하게 나아가게 되었고 삶이 변화되었다. 남편은 사운드 엔지니어로 마라나타 프레이즈 밴드, 프로미스키퍼 등의 단체와 일하던 사람이었고 체리는 그를 돕는 그저 평범한 아내였는데 우연한 기회로 작곡을 시작하고, 또 우연히(?) 레코딩까지 하게 되었다. 94년 첫 (워십)앨범 Child Of The Father를 내어놓은 결과, 놀랍게도 소리소문 없이 알려진 이 앨범의 10곡 중에 4곡이 넘버원을 차지하는 예상 밖의 좋은 결과가 나왔다. 특히 삶에 지친 가정 주부들이 체리에게 찾아와 "얼마나 큰 위로를 받았는지 모를거예요..."라고 눈물짓는 것을 보면 단순한 '아티스트' 이상으로 '삶을 함께 나누는' 그녀의 진지하고 겸손한 태도가 예상보다 훨씬 큰 힘을 가지고 있는 듯하다.
물론 가슴을 깊이 흔드는 그녀의 진솔함이 담긴 노래 때문이지만 성공에 기여한 결정적인 인물 중 하나는 프로듀싱을 맡은 찰리 피콕(Charlie Peacock)이었다. 음악적으로 발휘할 여지가 별로 없는 앨범임에도 불구하고 명 프로듀서 찰리 피콕이 가담하게 된 것은 (순전히 추측인데) 코람데오(Coram Deo) 앨범 등의 예배에 열정이 있었던 때문이 아닐까 싶다. 앨범을 들어보면 특별히 귀에 들어오는 곡도 없지만 그렇다고 듣기 싫은 곡도 없다. 앨범 전체가 하나님을 향해 정성 들여 만든 제단과 같이 오직 그분께만 초점이 맞추어져 있기에, 때로 지치거나 상한 마음 중에 들으면 큰 위로와 격려를 얻게 된다. 마치 현실의 얽매임에서 벗어나 하늘 고향으로, 아버지 품으로 들어가 편안히 쉬면서 "주님, 여기서 떠나지 않을래요. 주님과 함께 있고 싶어요."하며 사랑을 고백하는 듯한 그녀의 어린 아이 같은 멜로디가 때론 참 고맙게 느껴진다.
그녀의 새로운 노래들을 기다리던 사람들에게 96년 동일하게 찰리와 파트너십을 가진 2집 앨범 My Faith Will Stay 역시 '소박하지만 흔들림 있는' 영향력으로 4곡의 넘버원 송을 기록하며 한층 성숙되었으나 여전히 진솔한 그녀의 음악을 잘 표현해준 앨범이 되었다. 97년에 세 번째 앨범 What Matter Most와 99년 모음집 성격의 There Is Joy In The Lord로 점차 사그러지는 듯 보이지만 오히려 음악보다 예배사역 쪽으로 그 비중을 옮겼다고 보는 것이 옳을 듯 싶다.
사라와 카메론, 두 아이의 엄마 체리 케기의 모습을 가장 잘 나타내고 있는 노래 한 곡을 고르자면 바로 이 노래 - Heavenly Father(하늘 아버지) 일 것이다. 어린 아이의 기도와 같은 이 노래의 가사는 하나님과 아주 친밀하게 동행하고 대화하는 - 예배하는 그녀의 삶이 잘 드러나 있다.
" 옛날에 '빨래 개는 것은 하나님의 사랑처럼 끝이 없어라~'하고 농담하곤 했죠. 실제로 옷가지를 개는 동안 주님이 이 노래를 생각하게 하셨어요. 무언가 끌리는 느낌에 주님이 하던 일을 멈추고 피아노에 가 앉으라고 하시는 것 같았죠. 10분도 안 지나서 마치 사랑의 노래처럼 가사와 멜로디가 흘러 나왔어요. 삶의 일들이 아무리 바쁘다 해도 우리 하늘 아버지께서는 늘 우리와 교제하기 원하신다는 것을 다시 깨닫게 된 것이죠. "
하나님, 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지... 이해 관계로서가 아니라 사랑의 관계로 아버지와 자녀의 관계를 주신 그 분께 '사랑합니다' 고백하는 것은 아무리 반복해도 지나침이 없을 것이다. 돌이켜보니 이토록 '별 내용 없는' 가사에 참 많은 감동을 받았었다. 하루하루 분초를 다투는 바쁨 속에서 문득, 아무 걱정 없이 엄마의 손을 붙잡고 공원을 거니는 평안에 잠기곤 했던 기억... 이 노래를 듣는 동안 그런 평안을 느껴 볼 수 있다면, 무언가를 이루어 낸 것 이상으로 참 의미있는 시간이지 않을까 싶다.
P.S. : 정말 흔치 않은 성 케기(Keaggy)로 인해 필 케기(Phil Keaggy)와 무슨 관계냐고 많이 질문을 받는다고 한다. 실제 관련이 있기는 하다. 그녀가 아닌 남편 에디 케기의 삼촌뻘이라고...
