MAN’S REQUESTS OF GOD: THINGS TO BE THANKFUL FOR
Psalm 90:13-16

INTRODUCTION
The Psalmist makes five requests of God. They are the desires of his heart. They are also five things that God wants His people to have and enjoy. They are the same five things that all you and I should be thankful for. Let us examine these gifts of God for His people.
I. GOD SHOWERS COMPASSION UPON HIS SERVANTS—v. 13.
1. Compassion is a heavy sigh of sadness that leads to mercy and forgiveness.
2. Compassion is extended only to the servants (slaves) of God.
II. GOD SATISFIES US WITH HIS UNFAILING LOVE—v. 14.
1. This love is the never ending loving kindness (or mercy) of God.
2. God’s loving mercy satisfies—or fills up our need for love and mercy.
III. GOD SUBSTITUTES GLADNESS FOR AFFLCTION AND TROUBLE—v. 15.
1. Life is full of affliction and trouble—whether from God because of our sins, from the human condition, or from the sinful actions of others.
2. God lifts our spirits by giving us gladness (brightness in the midst of darkness) so that we can rejoice in the struggles of life.
IV. GOD SHOWS HIS DEEDS TO HIS PEOPLE—v. 16a.
1. God is always active in the lives of His people.
2. God is active in such a way that we can see that it is God acting in our behalf.
V. GOD SHOWS HIS SPLENDOR TO OUR CHILDREN—v. 16b.
1. Being a child of God has benefits for our children—not just us.
2. God reveals His magnificence, His beauty, and His glory to our children.
CONCLUSION
Because God blesses us in these five things, we sing for joy and are glad all of our days here on earth (see v. 14). God is a great and glorious God, working out His will in our lives and in the lives of our children. He gives to us out of His abundance and satisfies the longings of our hearts and minds. Stop and remember some of the things that God has done for you this year, this month, this day! Because of God’s great loving mercy and kindness, we should offer thanksgiving to God everyday of the year—not just during Thanksgiving week.
