DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR
Hebrews 11:32-40
Dr. Glenn A. Jent, Pastor
INTRODUCTION
An alcoholic in my hometown gave his life to the Lord. You have heard countless miraculous stories, but this man struggled with his past life. He prayed that he would never dishonor God—that he would rather die than do so. Within a year of his conversion, he was dead. I do not know all of the details, but I do know what I have told you is true. I can conclude that the premise of his prayer was valid: death before dishonor! Hebrews 11 tells of others who lived by the same premise.
I.       THE ROLL CALL OF THOSE WHO WOULD RATHER DIE THAN DISHONOR GOD (vv. 1-32)
1.        They were people who stood apart from the crowd and belonged to God.
2.        They were people who stood out among those who stood apart.
II.   THE RECITAL OF THE DEEDS OF THOSE WHO WOULD RATHER DIE THAN DISHONOR GOD (vv. 33-38)
1.        They did great things through faith.
(1) They conquered kingdoms (the words of Josephus describing King David).
(2) They administered justice (Samuel).
(3) They gained what was promised (Gideon).
(4) They shut the mouths of lions (Daniel).
(5) They quenched the fury of the flames (thee Hebrew children).
(6) They escaped the edge of the sword (Elijah—1 Kings 19ff.; Elisha—2 Kings 6:31ff.).
(7) They had their weakness turned into strength (Gideon el al.).
(8) They became powerful in battle (Samson, David, the Maccabees).
(9) They routed foreign armies (several kings and generals).
(10) Women received back their dead, raised to life again (Elijah and Elisha).
2.        They endured great things for their faith.
(1) They were tortured but refused to be released (unwilling to compromise).
(2) They faced jeers and flogging (like slaves—Jeremiah and Amos).
(3) They were chained and put in prison (like criminals—Jeremiah).
(4) They were stoned (like evildoers—Jeremiah by brethren, legend; Zechariah by Joash).
(5) They were sawed in two (Isaiah by Manasseh—legend).
(6) They were tested by temptations (unwilling to take the easy way out).
(7) They were put to death by the sword (Antiochus Epiphanes—Maccabees).
(8) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins.
(9) They were destitute, persecuted, and mistreated.
(10) They wandered in deserts, in mountains, in caves, and in holes in the ground.
III.  THE REVELATION OF GOD¡¯S ASSESSMENT OF THOSE WHO WOULD RATHER DIE THAN DISHONOR GOD (v. 38)
1.        This world was not worthy of them (would not listen to or receive blessings).
2.        A world was worthy of them and prepared for them by God (Heaven).
IV.   THE REWARD OF THOSE WHO WOULD RATHER DIE THAN DISHONOR GOD (vv. 35, 39)
1.        They obtained a better resurrection (to life, not to death).
2.        They obtained a commendation for their faith (¡°Well done!¡±).
V.      THE REASONS THEY WOULD RATHER DIE THAN DISHONOR GOD
1.        They knew what God had done for them in the past (His glorious acts in history).
2.        They knew what God was doing for them in the present (His glorious presence).
Thus, they knew what God would do for them in the future (in Messiah¡¯s coming deliverance).
CONCLUSION
They did not see the fulfillment of the promise, but the writer of Hebrews did. So did the readers. So have we! Many of the readers of this letter chose to die rather than to dishonor God. How about you and me? How will we respond to those who chose to die rather than dishonor God? Will we say that it is an old-fashioned idea and no longer appropriate in our post-modern world? Will we say that this was a great story, a great remembrance of the price of faithfulness, but then go away unchanged? OR will we be inspired and challenged to go forth determined that we, too, would rather die than dishonor God, His Name, His Word, His People? (See Hebrews 12:1-3.)
